COMPETITION IN NOWY SACZ

This is probably the most original sport discipline in the program of the European Games Krakow – Malopolska 2023. In 2024, breaking will debut at the Olympic Games in Paris, but before that it will come to Malopolska.

The competition will take place in Strzelecki Park in Nowy Sacz. A total of 32 Athletes, 16 men, and 16 women will take part in the Breaking competition, in two separate categories. Competition is Head to Head Individual. Athletes battling in a tournament format. First day is a Round Robin, which is a group phase- 4 groups of 4 Athletes each. Second day quarter finals, semi finals and finals.

The stands can accommodate about 2,500 spectators. The start of the competition is scheduled for June 26, and the finals will take place a day later. Importantly, the competition will be for passes to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games – two Quota Places to Paris 2024 (one for men and one for women) will be allocated during the Breaking competition EG2023, in accordance to the Olympic Qualification System.

In the Olympic movement, breaking first appeared in 2018, when it appeared on the list of disciplines of the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

FROM THE STREETS TO THE STADIUMS

Breaking was born in the seventies in the United States. It was then that dancers impressing with their flexibility, strength, endurance and sense of rhythm began to appear on the streets of New York. It was obvious at first glance that it was more than just a dance, although at that time it was still hard to imagine that one day breaking would become an Olympic discipline. At that time, it was about having fun in the rhythm of hip-hop, a way to creatively spend free time and entertain passers-by.

But that’s not all, because breaking was also about competition from the beginning, which brought him even closer to the world of sports. Over the years, this new form of activity has become more and more popular, and not only in the United States. The rules for judging the competition were created, and in the 1990s the first competitions were held in various places around the world. The new discipline quickly gained popularity and in parallel efforts began to consider breaking as an Olympic sport.
