Badminton Day 3: Ready for the quarterfinals
It has been a busy morning session at the badminton event of the European Games 2023 — the mixed doubles discipline had their last Group Stage matches, the Round of 16 for the men’s singles and women’s singles took place, and the draw for the knockout stage of the mixed doubles was conducted.
With the last Group Stage matches of the mixed doubles discipline taking place this morning, some pairs still had a chance to fight to advance to the knockout stage. In this case, all those who were successful in their groups will be playing the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the men’s singles and women’s singles disciplines already had their Round of 16 matches. The Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Viktor Axelsen, Denmark, had yet another good day on court to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will be facing Finland’s Kalle Koljonen.
Another highlight from this morning’s men’s singles matches was the tough fight between Julien Carraggi, Belgium, and Markus Bart, Norway. The thrilling match saw the Belgian athlete securing his spot for the next stage, 19-21,21-14, 23-21.
In the women’s singles, Team GB’s Kirsty Gilmour also had to get through quite the match to beat Hungary’s Vivien Sandorhazi. Gilmour won the match 17-21, 21-17, 21-17. Last on court, Swiss player Jenjira Stadelmann won against Keisha Fatima Az Zahra, 16-21, 21-12, 21-15. Stadelmann will be playing against Lianne Tan, Belgium, for a spot in the semifinals.
