Just as in mixed doubles, the women’s final of the European Games in Krakow will also be an affair between Italy and Spain. Marta Barrera and Marta Caparros lived up to the predictions, defeating Chiara Pappacena and Giulia Sussarello in two sets (6-3 6-4); in the second semifinal, however, Carolina Orsi and Giorgia Marchetti realized a masterpiece.

From the fourth seed on the draw, they defeated the number 2 seed, the Spaniards Noa Canovas and Araceli Maria Martinez. It was a crazy match that lasted over two hours, with the Italians winning the first set 6-4 but losing the second by the same score. In the deciding set, however, Orsi and Marchetti led by a break, before the Spanish comeback. Back on serve, however, was another stretch by the Italian girls, who will play for the gold medal tomorrow.

“I want to watch the match again for one month”, said Giorgia Marchetti in ecstasy for an extraordinary result.

On the other side, the tears of Noa Canovas, consoled by Spanish federation president Ramon Morcillo, who had previously celebrated Barrera and Caparros after the first semifinal.

The bronze medal game, of course, will also see Italy and Spain face each other: the challenge will be total.
