Two times world champion Tomasz Adamek returns from retirement and will appear in the 14th Mountain Race “Przełęcz pod Ostrą”!
Tomasz Adamek needs no introduction to anyone. The retired fighter, who has twice won championship belts in professional boxing since 2018, remains in sports retirement. This one, however, has come to an end!
Tomasz Adamek (53-6) started competing in professional rings in 1999. The career of the fighter from Gilowice in 2005 brought him to Chicago where he won the first championship belt of the welterweight category, of the WBC federation, at the United Center. The bloody duel with Paul Briggs will always remain in the memory of boxing fans, not only from Poland. Another scalp came already in the cruiserweight division when “Góral” won the IBF belt defeating Steve Cunningham. Thus he went down in Polish boxing history as world champion of two weight categories.
The heavyweight championship belt was not won, but the Pole left behind him many great ring wars. He won against, among others, Andrzej Golota, Chris Arreola and Travis Walker. His last fights were in Poland when he won against Solomon Haumono or Joey Abell. In 2018, he tried to get closer to the top in a bout with Jarrell Miller. In the ring with Chicago, however, he lost already in the second round. Since then, the Gilovice fighter has not entered the ring again and has been in sports retirement. This, however, is about to change!
Tomasz Adamek has been in Poland in recent weeks and participated in the “Box for Life” project, which aims to raise awareness among young people who have lost their way that sports and boxing offer a chance for a good life. Together with another fighter Mateusz Rzadkosz, they visited orphanages, reformatories explaining what can be won by training in sports.
In addition, the “Highlander” took part in rally training. All this to prepare well for his return from retirement! This time the former fist fighter will get behind the wheel and drive one of the cars during the 14th Mountain Race “Przełęcz pod Ostrą”. The event, which this year is a side event of the European Games, promises to be very interesting!
– Probably not everyone believes that I will go as a driver, they think as a pilot. However, Adamek is getting into the car. There was an inquiry if I would like to try it. Of course I said yes, no problem. I like to drive fast, the first tests are over. The team was surprised, because I had not much worse times, and I drove this style for the first time – he said in an interview with sports journalist Karol Garncarz. The entire interview is available HERE.
The 14th Mountain Race “Przełęcz pod Ostrą” takes place in Stara Wieś near Limanowa. Since 2014 it has the rank of the European Mountain Race Championship. The route of the race is 5493 meters. The start begins at an altitude of 498 meters above sea level, and the flying finish is at 800 meters.
