Big surprise in Rugby 7 tournament
After the second day of Rugby 7 at European Games we know, which teams will play at semifinals and fight for medals. The Czech Republic came as a surprise, eliminating Spain in the women’s tournament.
It was very exciting day at the Henryk Reyman’s Municipal Stadium in Kraków. After the end of pool stage and quarterfinals we know, which teams will play at semifinals on Tuesday.
In the morning session teams played their last games of preeliminary phase. Great Britain women’s team defeated Czechia 375: and won group A. Poland after two victories on the first day, confirmed good shape and beat Germany 43:7. After exciting game Spain defeated Belgium 29:7 and won group C.
In the quarterfinals, the Czech Republic caused a big surprise by winning against Spain 17:12 and in semifinal they’ll play with Poland. Team led by Janusz Urbanowicz beat Italy 33:15.
In the second semifinal Great Britain will meet Belgium.
Ireland men’s team once again proved, that they are on of the favorite and defeated Germany 19:7. As same as Great Britain, which finished the group phase with a set of victories. It was another poor day for Poland’s team, which lost their third game against Italy 0:50 and finished pool stage without any try.
In the quarterfinals, the favorites triumphed. Convincing victories were won by the Irish, Portuguese and Spanish. The group of semifinalists was rounded out by the British, who had trouble in the match against Germany, but eventually won 14:10. And we will see those four teams on semifinals.
In addition to fighting for European Games medals, Europe’s top teams will try to gain Olympic qualification for the 2024 Paris. The winner of the tournament automatically qualifies for the Olympic Games, while the second and third teams will go to an international repechage tournament. All medalists from the European Games will thus retain their chance to play at the world’s biggest sporting event in 2024.
