Alice Sotero with gold medal of European Games and European Championships in modern pentathlon!
The 32-year-old Asti-born athlete had built up a 20-second lead over Luka Barta from Hungary and a 21-second lead over Rebecca Langrehr from Germany before the last competition – the laser run. The participant in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo made a mistake 18 times on four shots, but she made up for it all over the 3-kilometer distance, impressing with her incredible endurance. She fell at the finish line with an impressive lead of 39 seconds over Spain’s Laura Heredia and 44 seconds over Olivia Green of Great Britain.
The Italian pentathlete was not among the top three horseback riding competitors. The parkour with ten obstacles and a limit of 62 seconds was completed flawlessly by Rebecca Castaudi (on horse Niko), Heredia (Balu Boy) and Barta (Mocca Cafe). Sotero had one drop and received a total of 293 points.
The Italian showed her strength to her rivals first in the fencing bonus (she won against Kerenza Bryson) and in the swimming, where she not only came in first, but improved her best result this year in the 200 meter freestyle – 2:09.02.
Promotion to the Paris Olympics in addition to the first three was won by Laura Asadauskaite of Lithuania (Olympic champion from London and runner-up from Tokyo, for whom this will be the fifth Olympics in her sports career, the Lithuanian was fastest in the laser run 10:50), Marie Oteiza (France), Michelle Gulyas (Hungary), Annika Zillekens (Germany, the most unlucky athlete of the Tokyo IO) and Lucie Hlavackova of the Czech Republic, who laser run finished in penultimate place, and additionally performed worst in the parkrun, not even receiving a point for a triple breakout (stopping in front of an obstacle).
The gold medal in the team competition was won by Germany (Janine Kohlmann, Langrehr, Zillekens) ahead of Lithuania (Asadauskaite, Gintare Venckauskaite, Iewa Serapinaite) and Hungary (Gulyas, Barta, Blanka Guzi). Poland only in ninth place (Natalia Dominika, Anna Maliszewska, Marta Kobecka).
