The AGH UST Student Campus became the official Athletes Village for the upcoming  III European Games. In front of a large crowd of guests, EOC Vice President Hasan Arat handed over the symbolic keys to the village to Robert Korzeniowski. The former athlete became the “mayor” and caretaker of the place, which will welcome 3,500 athletes from 48 countries over the next two weeks.

The Opening Ceremony of the III European Games is this Wednesday. More than 7,000 athletes will attend this year’s biggest sporting event. Meanwhile today, Sunday June 18, the Athletes Village was officially opened, and soon will welcome 3,500 athletes from 48 countries, participating in competitions in Krakow and Malopolska over the next two weeks.

Among the guests on stage were: Marcin Nowak – president of the European Games 2023 ltd., Robert Korzeniowski – four-time Olympic champion and now “the mayor of the Athletes Village”, and Hasan Arat – chairman of the EOC Coordination Commission of the III European Games Krakow-Malopolska 2023. They welcomed the athletes, journalists,members of the Organising Committee, and volunteers, pointing out that Krakow is our common home now, where “We are unity”, and not rivals.

Hasan Arat directed his words mainly to the volunteers. “This village is the heart of the European Games. And there are no Games without the volunteers, whom I would like to thank sincerely for all the work they put into this event. Enjoy this coming time, which will undoubtedly be fanstastic,” said the vice president of the Association of European Olympic Committees.

President Marcin Nowak,primarily addressed the present athletes. “Dear friends, welcome to Poland, to Krakow – one of the most beautiful places in our country, of historical importance. You have an amazing time ahead of you – enjoy it, enjoy the competitions, win medals. Thank you for being with us, I wish you all the best. See you in 3 days at the Opening Ceremony,” he said.

Hasan Arat announced the new role of Robert Korzeniowski, whom he appointed “Mayor of the Athletes Village,” while handing him the symbolic keys.

Robert Korzeniowski did not hide his excitement about the task entrusted to him. “This is a real honor for me, I am extremely happy to be here with you, and I hope that this key will also be the key to your hearts. I already live in the Village and remain at your disposal. I hope you will enjoy all the available services that we have been able to provide with the help of the EOC. Every day, concerts await you, you can use the Studio Club, monitors with reports from all the arenas of the Games, relaxation areas, a swimming pool, sauna, as well as religious spaces dedicated to various faiths. An absolute novelty is also access to personalized videos of each athlete, which they can share on their social media channels,” said the famous walker. “Krakow for me personally is a special place in my sports career, and I hope that it will become an equally important place for you. Remember, We are unity” the athlete added, recalling the slogan of this year’s Games.

The first athletes are already living in the Athletes Village, and the largest group of athletes will arrive here on June 22, the day after the Opening Ceremony of the European Games.
