Portugal defeated Poland twice in beach soccer tournament
Thursday was not a successful day for the Polish women’s and men’s national teams competing in the beach soccer tournament at the 3rd European Games Krakow-Malopolska 2023. Both women and men suffered defeats in matches against Portugal.
The Polish women were unlucky to lose the decisive goal a second before the end of the match. Melissa Gomes scored from a free kick to secure a 2-1 win for Portugal and top spot in Group A.
Gomes was an author of both goals for Portugal that day. She also scored at the start of the third period to make it 1:0. Two minutes before the end, Katarzyna Gozdek led to a draw. However, her hit did not even give the Poles a point. Fortunately, the hosts had already secured a place in the semi-finals the day before.
For the final, the Polish women will play on Friday against the best in Group B and the highest seed in the tournament, the Spanish.
The men’s team, on the other hand, will be missing in the semi-finals. Despite an ambitious performance, the hosts lost 2:6 to the main favourites of the tournament, the Portuguese. However, the start of the match was excellent for the Poles – they were leading after two seconds of play thanks to a goal scored by Daniel Baran. Their rivals, however, took the lead before the end of the first period and increased it several times. Leonardo Santos and Miguel Pintado scored two goals each.
The Portuguese will face the Swiss in the semi-finals. The second pair will be made up of Spain and Italy. The Poles will compete for places 5 to 8. On Friday, they will face Moldova.
