Thomas Lemagner wins third straight Sport Climbing gold for Team France
A thrilling men’s Boulder final concluded with another celebration for Team France, as Thomas LEMAGNER won his country’s third consecutive gold in Sport Climbing at the European Games.
The talented 17-year-old French won a tight battle against Latvia’s Edvards GRUZITIS, climbing to the top of the Krakow-Malopolska 2023 podium with two tops and four zones. Crucial to his win, was the zone on the fourth problem, which no-one else among the finalists managed to secure.
GRUZITIS won silver with two tops and three zones, missing what would have been a third, decisive top on M3 for a matter of seconds.
The bronze medal was awarded to Switzerland’s Julien CLEMENCE with two tops – on M1 and M3 – and two zones.
Entering the stage with the first seed, Great Britain’s Dayan AKHTAR slipped outside of the medal positions and concluded fourth with one top and three zones. Slovenia’s Gregor VEZONIK and Germany’s Lasse VON FREIER closed in the bottom two positions: the experienced Slovenian placed fifth with one top and two zones, and his German rival closed sixth with two zones.
