About Zakopane

The mountain capital of Poland. Zakopane impresses with its rich tourist and sports offerings, extraordinary Tatra views, distinctive architecture and one-of-a-kind “oscypki” on Krupówki Street.

Zakopane is not only the largest city in the Tatra region, but also the highest located city in Poland. It is also home to part of the picturesque Tatra National Park. One of the biggest attractions is Gubałówka, a hill located in the western part of the city, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the entire area. The central part of Zakopane is Krupówki. It is an iconic tourist spot and one of the most famous streets in Poland. Its name comes from the clearing where the street was laid out and which belonged to the Krupowski family. It is a unique place with not only the best stores and eateries, but it is also where you can take a picture with the popular teddy bear or take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.

In addition, in Zakopane you can find a great number of hiking trails perfect for lovers of hiking, climbing and breathtaking views. Art lovers will have a wonderful time at the Municipal Art Gallery or the Władyslaw Hasior’s Gallery. What’s also interesting, the local villas and spas were built in the characteristic architectural Zakopane style, popularized by the famous Polish artist Stanisław Witkiewicz.

Zakopane is also famous as an arena for winter sports. It owes this mainly to the Wielka Krokiew Jumping Hill, which is the largest jumping hill in the country. It was built before World War II, and some of the most prestigious competitions are held here.

Zakopane’s unique atmosphere makes the city a very popular tourists destination during Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or winter holidays. However, it is also worth coming to the area in spring to admire the blooming crocuses in the Chochołowska Valley.
